God damn bands from Alberta can you please stop putting out hit after hit?  Well I am not going to complain and you, the reader, already know with out reading this review that this album is fucking awesome.

Book of Caverns is one of my favorite bands right now so I was sure that they couldn’t put out another emotional powerful rager but they prove me wrong with Homes. Go listen to this release on and wish that it was out now.

FFO: Capsule, Angel Hair, Phoenix Bodies

First off, this band immediately gave me a bit of a Phoenix Bodies vibe, so of course I loved the whole thing. Similar to Phoenix Bodies, there’s very spazzy riffs mixed with really dragging (can’t think of a better word to describe it) breakdowns. Also, a lot like Capsule in the general feel of the record, especially in the quiet, interlude parts. There’s definitely some Mohinder, Angel Hair, Honeywell-ish sounds on this record for sure, though; it’s very noisy, discordant screamo. Excellent release overall, and it’s free on their bandcamp.

Coalspur – At Aulis

Band – Coalspur (Bandcamp) (Facebook)
Release Title – At Aulis
Medium – Tape
Label –(Northern Haunt Records)
Style – Post Hardcore/Emo
From - Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Info -

This release is so flat out amazing, Edmonton seriously has it going on, but I still cannot believe that I didn’t hear about this band earlier.  Coalspur is a three piece that play down tempo post-hardcore/emo.  Each song drags us slowly through despair  and sorrow.  I’d pick my favorite one for you to check out but listen to all four.

7 inches 7 Days: Inch 1

I am writing this from my work’s community computer so I don’t know if all the links and things work because it is… a community work computer… Also this post will be of lesser quality than the normal awful due to being in the middle of working a double.

I picked this up because I love Damages or Damages (Vancouver) but I also soon felt myself fall in love with Book of Caverns.  Damages bring the heavy post hardcore/screamo with a nod to 90′s emo.  I can’t tell you enough how much you need to hear them and own their stuff.  I have been waiting on React to get their store up and ready so I can order their new release but it has been down for months.

Book of Caverns give you a strong lesson on emotion through indie/screamo.  I first thought this band was awful but by the tenth second of listening to them I had turned myself around and shunned my past.  They have released only a handful of songs but all of them are mind blowing.  Get this record now!

Todos Caerán – After Dark (2011)

Band – Todos Caerán (Website) (Bandcamp) (Facebook)
Release Title – After Dark
Medium – Twelve Inch
Label – (Revolution Winter)
Style – Screamo/Post-Rock
From - Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Track List -

  1. After Dark
  2. The Wild Sheep Chase
  3. Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World
  4. Dance Dance Dance
  5. The Wind-up Bird Chronicle

Info -

I am not keeping track so I am sure I have said this before but I am pretty sure that this was the best record of 2011.  Todos Caerán opens up with a long well written monologue and even though I have listened to this record over and over again I constantly find myself in awe over that intro.  The rest of the album delivers as well.  You are always kept on your feet with sometimes slow and spoken word part’s to loud intense sections.  Edmonton seems to have it these days and I am crazy jealous, my Facebook feed tells me that I need to get my passport in check and to take some days off of work and see some rad shit.

Lizards Have Personalities gave me this tape when I booked them in town during the summer.  Unbeknownst to me at the time I would be holding onto something that I would be listening to over and over again that summer.

I am usually afraid of picking up splits with multiple bands and especially ones that I haven’t heard of yet.  There is just usually a high percent chance that one band will ruin the record by being a complete stinker.  Luckily for us all the songs are totally rad.

Lizards Have Personalities pull a reversal and sing in French (I believe) in their first song.  This is rad because most non English bands seem to be singing in English now a days so its cool to see someone doing the opposite.  I obviously picked up the tape from them so I can tell you that I love the tracks.

SAS, from Madrid plays Screamo/Hardcore, their tracks are fast and loud and very emotional.  I can tell what they are saying at times but since I don’t know Spanish I don’t know what it means.  I assume they are saying “We are a super rad band that you will start to follow now.”

I had just picked up After Dark from Todos Caerán a few days before I got this tape, so I hadn’t been able to listen to it.  If I had I would have been stoked that they are on it.  Everything by them so far is so amazing.  After dark has to be one of the best records of last year.  Amazing screamo/emotional hardcore.

Book of Caverns is a band that I can never say right and it annoys me of how dumb I am.  I always end up saying books of caravans.  I’m a fucking idiot.  They were the biggest surprise for me of 2011, I got their split with damages a while before and spun it a bunch then got distracted and forgot about it.  This tape reminded me of their glory.  Their vocalist has a unique voice and I love that kind of stuff.  Sounds like a mix of spoken/cried/pleaded.  Post-hardcore at its finest.

Info -

Starting off Canada has been pumping out some rad bands as of late and Mahria is one of them.  This is Emotional Hardcore at its finest, a lot of shouted vocals with noodly and twinkly bits spread throughout the songs.  I’m always stoked on female vocals because female fronted bands don’t pop up that often.  I’d say that they sound like a harder and louder Suffix (Chicago).  Save Yourself has got to be the best track on the record, it follows a instrumental track, and sounds like one big meltdown especially at the end of the track.  I found myself feeling uncomfortable, which is always a good feeling.

I just ordered this tape today and I’m stoked on the tape artwork, clear case with an imprint of a forest.  Love it when bands and labels go the distance to make sweet looking releases.
